Description

This story belongs to the Gamalaŋga and Gorryindi clans who are owners of the northern side of Milingimbi and adjacent islands to the east. In this story Boḏuk (a small black beetle) and Ḻapakarra (spotted tree goanna) decided to paint each other. Boḏuk painted a beautiful spotted design on the back of Ḻapakara but Ḻapakarra painted Boḏuk black with just two red dots. Boḏuk looked at himself was not happy so he urinated in the water turning it from fresh water into saltwater.

But Weṯi (wallaby) was watching and listening to their argument. Weṯi ran and harvested paper bark, and then collected some fresh water, hiding it near a tree. Weṯi saved the drinking water for everyone.
