Description
This miny’tji (sacred clan design) shows two Mäḻarra clan totems that are shared with several other Dhuwa clans in Central Arnhem Land. Depicted are the star-like djewuḻ, sand dollars that bioluminesce. The seaweed is bäḏay, a kelp-like seaweed that is found off the deep water of Murruŋga Island. Bäḏay is said to be twined to make rope. The three strings that are twined to make this rope are said to be symbolic of the three Dhuwa Yan-nhaŋu clans, Mäḻarra, Gamaḻaŋga and Gorryindi working together. The colour used on the bäḏay are Gamaḻaŋga colours.
This miny’tji belongs to the artist’s märipulu (mother’s mother clan).
This artwork is unframed.
