Description
My mother taught me how to weave this one when I was a girl, maybe 10 years old?
They started making baskets like these after the missions came, before that we were only weaving mats, mindirr, fish traps, things like that. No baskets with handles like this.
Sometime we sold them and sometimes we used them for collecting bush ŋatha like Munydjutj, gulaka (yam), and ṉarraṉi (red apple) and räkay (edible water reed roots). Only light things like fruits and vegetables, no fish. It has holes so it is easy to clean the dirt and leaves. It is very light, but very strong.
This type, nobody makes it now.
